Whether it’s finding your perfect partner, house, employee or dream job it can be a challenge. But luckily the recruitment market is picking up and clients and candidates are benefiting from a buoyant job market. So how can you find your perfect job or candidate? When my team first spoke to me about this blog and our social media theme the first thing that came to mind was how much our job sometimes feels like a dating agency. So much so in fact we have often thought about opening one! With this analogy in mind I was thinking about how we can help when finding your dream job or candidate so here goes, let’s see how this works....
Thinking about on-line dating websites the first thing to think about is what you really want and who you want to attract. What is your check-list? What are your short-term goals/long-term goals? What would you be prepared to flexi on and what is definitely non-negotiable!!
Next it’s all about your profile, CV or job spec. Let’s face it if someone doesn’t like what you have to say about yourself they won’t give you a second look (or maybe only when they have exhausted all other avenue’s and had a glass of wine or two) not what you ideally want! So make it positive, succinct and tailored to what you want.
Job boards and social media sites give you the option to post a picture of yourself so think about what your profile picture says about you? Let’s be fair folks, people will make an impression of you from this - it’s only natural and we all do it. If you look a little bit worse for wear after a night out or are wearing your “beach attire” what might you be saying? It’s definitely something to think about as I know many of our Employers check out candidates before they come for interview.
So you receive a message! Excellent someone is interested!! Do you play the game, play hard to get? Or respond immediately? In the case of finding your dream job or perfect candidate, you need to respond immediately, time is of the essence as you don’t want to miss out! Contact the agency, client or candidate and show your interest. Ensure you listen, ask the right questions – make sure you really like the sound of the job or the candidate and this will ideally secure that all important date or interview in this case!
Okay so you get the date (Interview) what next.....? Think about what you will wear. You want to look your best and dress for the job you aspire to. Research the company, check LinkedIn, study the profile (CV or job spec) and really think about what it is about the role or candidate that meets your short-term and long-term goals and try and prepare how you can express this. Think about what you have to offer in terms of experience, qualifications, personality, and achievements that will impress your potential new employer. If you are the client; what does this person bring to your role, to your company? How would they fit in with your team? How could they develop? In both cases do they meet the essential non-negotiable requirements or are there too many areas where you would have to be flexible and are you willing to do this.
So it’s the day of the date (Interview). Don’t be late! Be clear where you are meeting and be prepared. First impressions count, so smile, be confident but friendly. Let’s face it, everyone gets nervous at interviews (it’s natural), but don’t let nerves overtake you. If you’ve done your homework you will make a good impression and if at the end you think this is the candidate or job for you, let them know! Be keen, interested but not over the top – indicate a timeframe of when you would like to see the candidate again or ask what the next step is if you’re the candidate and let them know you really want the job.
Whatever you do follow up – the worst feeling in the world is when someone says they will call and they don’t!
